WSce wins Toowoomba Hospital Hydraulic Design

WSce wins the hydraulic design for the new $1.3b Toowoomba Hospital.

Our team is excited to partner with John Holland and the Queensland Government on the hydraulic design stage for the new $1.3 billion Toowoomba Hospital – a vital component of the Queensland Health and Hospitals Plan.

The project will deliver new state-of-the-art facilities on the 75-hectare Baillie Henderson Hospital campus, adding 118 beds to Toowoomba Base Hospital’s existing capacity. The campus will feature tree-lined spaces between heritage buildings, multidisciplinary health services, research facilities, education centres, commercial spaces, and community recreation areas.

Project commencement

The commencement of the project was recently commemorated with a sod-turning ceremony in May 2024. Upon completion, the Toowoomba Hospital will provide new and expanded healthcare services to the region, catering to its growing population. Project completion is scheduled for late 2027.

The construction phase alone will create around 3,127 jobs, significantly boosting the local economy. The completed hospital will positively impact the community by providing state-of-the-art facilities, reducing the need for people to travel for specialised care.

WSce’s healthcare expertise

Tom Wise, QLD Director, said, “We’ve been at the forefront of creating cutting-edge, sustainable, and energy-efficient healthcare facilities. Our long history in the healthcare sector provides us with a solid understanding of what it takes to design healthcare spaces that genuinely work for patients, staff, and communities. Our involvement in developing the Australasian Health Facility Guidelines (AusHFG) and Engineering Services Guidelines (ESG), which set engineering standards for public hospitals in Australia and New Zealand, showcases our significant contribution to the sector. ”

WSce’s healthcare portfolio includes the design of more than 120 private and public hospitals, including all three NSW/ACT post-disaster hospital facilities and pioneering departments, such as hot labs associated with PET CT and nuclear medicine areas, infectious diseases and microbiology labs, pathology units, and radiation oncology.

Past healthcare projects include John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct, Westmead Hospital Redevelopment, Nepean Hospital Stage 1, and Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct.

Brian McDonnell, our recently appointed QLD General Manager, brilliantly captured the importance of this win. “WSce expanded its operations into Queensland in 2024, and this project represents a significant milestone in solidifying our presence in Queensland. We’re excited to partnerships with key stakeholders like John Holland and QLD Health.”

Paul Angus, National Head of Strategy and Growth, highlighted the long-term vision and strategic move to focus on health and expand our operations into Queensland. “This is just the start of things to come. We are incredibly proud to collaborate with the John Holland design team to transform Queensland Health’s vision into a reality.’
